Although this vehicle looks like a Birmingham ‘Standard’, it is in fact unique. Originally manufactured as a chromium plated chassis exhibit for the 1952 Commercial Motor Show, she received her lightweight Metro-Cammell body during the next two years, and was exhibited complete at the next Commercial Motor Show in 1954.
All her service life with BCT was at Acocks Green garage, but she was never popular with the drivers, as the Gardner 5LW engine was noticeably underpowered.
The lightweight body was a model for Metro-Cammell’s ‘Orion’ style of bodywork, using ‘pop’ rivets in place of screws, But still to Birmingham’s superior specification. The lightweight design uses anodised aluminium to replace the usual interior wooden mouldings.
We are very pleased to tell you that this vehicle is now on the road, and is used on our free bus services.
