1935 DAIMLER COG5

BIRMINGHAM CITY TRANSPORT 83 - AOG 679

OWNED BY ASTON MANOR ROAD TRANSPORT MUSEUM

BODY: BANK VAN BY RIVERLEE OF TYSELEY
ENGINE: GARDNER 5LW 7.0 LITRES DIESEL
TRANSMISSION: PRESELECT

Originally built with a Northern Counties 48 seat double deck body, after arduous service during the Second World War the bodywork was in poor condition. With 16 of its sisters in 1947, the bus bodywork was removed and scrapped, and in the case of 679 a special body was built with the purpose of providing a means of transferring large amounts coins collected to the local banks. It was doing the job of a modern day Securicor van. As 83, a further 20 years use was achieved in this form being based at Rosebery Street Depot.

In 1967 Arthur Whitehouse became the first person to successfully buy a vehicle for preservation from BCT direct, and for some years after that 83 was used frequently for towing purposes.

After many years storage and out of the public eye, 83 can be seen again, and although Arthur has kindly donated it to Aston Manor Road Transport Museum, as he still lives locally, his assistance towards its full restoration will be very welcome.

As part of the Museums future restoration planning, work has begun on 83, mainly to include refitting of panels, but it is hoped we will see this vehicle on the road in 2007.
