1960 AEC ROUTEMASTER

LONDON TRANSPORT RM 506 - WLT506

OWNED BY ASTON MANOR ROAD TRANSPORT MUSEUM

BODY: PARK ROYAL 64 SEATS (36 UPPER, 28 LOWER)
ENGINE: LEYLAND 0600
TRANSMISSION: AUTOMATIC

RM 506, one of London’s famous Routemasters has integrally constructed Park Royal bodywork. She was originally built with AEC running units. However after undergoing major overhaul at London Transport’s Aldenham Works, was rebuilt with Leyland 0600 running units, which are still fitted today.

RM 506 was purchased from London Transport by the West Midlands Probation Service in Birmingham. who used her for several years, before kindly donating her to Aston Manor Road Transport Museum in 1989. The vehicle was heavily vandalised before we acquired her, but work is well underway to restore her back to original condition.

RM 506 has taken a lot of hard work, beginning with almost complete repanelling, and new windows all round. A full repaint and retrimming the interior. More recently mechanical work including a new king pin, new power steering ram and front brake linings to name a few.

With only a few minor details to complete our aim of returning RM 506 has been achieved with the vehicle now MOTd and taxed for the first time in at least 16 years. See photos taken at the RM50 rally. RM 506 will be used on our heritage bus services, and also on our open days, come along for a ride!
