1956 SUNBEAM F4A TROLLEYBUS

WALSALL CORPORATION TRANSPORT 872 - XDH 72

OWNED BY BRITISH TROLLEYBUS SOCIETY

BODY: WILLOWBROOK 70 SEAT (36 UPPER, 34 LOWER)
ENGINE:
TRANSMISSION:

This vehicle was the last trolleybus delivered to Walsall Corporation, and also the last one in service when the system was closed in 1970.

The earlier batch made history when delivered, by being the first thirty feet long two axle double deck public service vehicles to operate on British roads, although single deckers of that length had been permitted since 1950.

Upon withdrawal 872 was purchased for preservation, and has been resident at Sandtoft Trolleybus Museum since 1971. Whilst structurally sound, a fair amount of work is required to make it roadworthy.

In the meantime Walsall 862, from the pioneer first batch, is kept at the Black Country Museum at Dudley, and operates from the overhead wires there.
